What Should I Do After A Hurricane?
No amount of preparation can completely prevent hurricane damage to your home. After a hurricane, take these steps for the best chance of your insurance claim being handled appropriately:
- Protect Damaged Property: If your property has been damaged, cover it with a tarp to prevent further water damage. Your insurance company will be looking for any reason to avoid paying you. If they can blame you for the damage after the storm, they may deny your claim.
- Document All Damage Immediately: As soon as you are able to, take photos and videos of the damage to the outside of your home and the surrounding lot. Then, take photos and videos inside the house. Take photos of entire rooms and individual objects. Make an inventory of all your damaged property. This will help to prove damages for your insurance claim.
- File Your Claim Quickly: Insurance policies generally require you to act fast after a storm hits. Take your photographs, write your property inventory, and then file your claim as soon as you possibly can.
